Longtime Boston Red Sox announcer Jerry Remy raised eyebrows Tuesday when he said that New York Yankees pitcher Masahiro Tanaka should not be allowed to have his translator visit with him on the mound. He thinks Tanaka should “learn baseball language.”
“I don’t think that should be legal,” said Remy to his fellow broadcaster Dave O’Brien. “Learn baseball language. You know, learn, it’s pretty simple.”

Tanaka had given up back to back home runs in the fourth inning of Tuesday’s game against the Red Sox and Yankees, prompting his catcher to come from behind the plate to talk things over.
Catchers can visit twice with the pitcher per inning, but managers and coaches can only visit once per pitcher each inning. Remy felt that the Yankees were in violation of this rule by allowing a communicator to come out for the catcher visits.
On Wednesday Remy tweeted an apology and said he was sorry if he offended anyone with his comments.

The NESN network that shows the Red Sox games released a statement apologizing for Remy’s comments.
Relative to NESN’s telecast last night from New York, NESN does not agree with any such view expressed by Jerry Remy and we know from talking to Jerry that he regrets making them. The network sincerely apologizes to anyone who was offended by Jerry’s comments.
Remy has been a fixture in Red Sox culture for decades. He’s been an announcer since 1988 and was a player for Boston for seven seasons, eventually being inducted into the team’s Hall of Fame.
