A teen miraculously survived an attack by a 400 pound bear that bit into his head at a campground in Border Country, Colo. Sunday morning.

Camp survival instructor Dylan, whose last name has been withheld, was sleeping in a teepee when the bear approached him and bit into his skull. A Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) sheriff reported that the attack occurred at 4:15 a.m. at Glacier View Ranch, adding that there was neither food nor objects present that would have provoked an attack, according to 9News.

“There’s four spots where its claws dug into me,” said the 19-year-old victim. “And then it pulled me into its mouth and then it grabbed me with its teeth right back here, and when it pulled it tore the skin and scraped along my skull which was like the cracking noise that I heard.”

“I thought I was dreaming for a second, and then I thought ‘This hurts too bad to be dreaming,'” Dylan said.

Dylan said he punched and hit the bear while other staffers who had woken up yelled and swatted at the bear, getting it to stop its attack and leave, according to the Coloradoan.

“We need to chase these animals off. They need to have a healthy natural fear of people,” said CPW spokeswoman Jen Churchill. “This is really a bear that could be a continual threat to people in this community.”

Colorado park authorities declared Dylan’s survival a miracle, and he is making a full recovery with just a few head staples.

A human has not died from a bear attack since 2009.
