A Texas court ruled that a man must pay $65,000 in child support to his ex-girlfriend, despite not being the biological father of the child, the New York Post reported Sunday.

Texas resident Gabriel Cornejo, 45, was ordered to pay child support to his ex-girlfriend, despite not being the biological father. The state’s family code says that, even though Cornejo is not the child’s father, he still owes the payments since the child support was ordered before the paternity test proved he was not the father.

“I never thought in my whole life I would have to defend myself of something that I am innocent of,” Cornejo told reporters.

Cornejo is currently working with a lawyer to reopen the case, since the original order cannot be legally changed. If the court refuses, Cornejo must pay the $65,000 or otherwise face jail time.
