Secretary of Defense James Mattis, doesn’t strike me as the type of man to make a big deal over birthdays, but we’re going to anyways.

A Marine general nicknamed “Mad Dog” is not one to be messed with, and that’s part of the reason that President Trump brought him on as his Secretary of Defense. Despite, the nickname came long before General Mattis joined the 45th president in the nation’s capitol.

Secretary Mattis spent 44 years in the Marine Corps, during which he also earned himself the nickname of “Warrior Monk” because he never married or had children.

During his time in the armed forces, Mattis served as head of the US Joint Forces Command and Nato Supreme Allied Commander. After that, he was promoted as the head of US Central Command (Centcom) where he led the American military’s Middle East forces.

Celebrate General “Mad Dog” Mattis’ birthday with some of his best quotes.
