A 16-year-old German teenage Islamic State bride who was captured after the Iraqi Security Forces retook the city of Mosul, may face execution, Iraqi Prime Minister Haidar Al-Abadi told the Associated Press.
Linda Wenzel was found barricaded in a tunnel with other foreign ISIS female members with guns and explosives after the city fell to the Iraqi Security Forces in late July. German authorities lost track of her in 2016 after flight records indicated she arrived in Istanbul while she told her parents she was having a sleepover at a friend’s house.
“You know teenagers under certain laws, they are accountable for their actions especially if the act is a criminal activity when it amounts to killing innocent people,” Abadi said of Wenzel’s case.
Wenzel is now awaiting trial for assisting the terrorist group’s police force during her time in Mosul, while she also bore a child for her now deceased terrorist husband. Iraqi authorities previously accused her of acting as a sniper throughout the battle, saying, “We found her with a gun in her hand next to her Chechen husband, who was then killed by Iraqi forces in a firefight. She said she had killed a number of our men in the battle,” shortly after her capture.
Iraq would have to imprison Wenzel until she is 22 in order to legally execute her under its laws but their decision to move forward with prosecution likely means she will not be extradited. German authorities however previously told local media they are confident she will be spared the death penalty but expect her to serve a long prison sentence before her release to Germany.
