A state of emergency has been declared in Sonoma County, Calif., after wildfires sparked late Sunday razed dozens of buildings and forced thousands to evacuate.

The extent of the damage is unknown as firefighters are rushing to control at least 10 separate blazes. Strong winds whipped fires into massive infernos as nearly every fire resource in the county came to fight. Many people were forced to evacuate in the middle of the night, according to the Press Democrat.

“We don’t have enough help. The fire is so big,” Windsor Fire Chief Jack Piccinini said. “Everyone in Sonoma County is spread out fighting these fires, but they don’t have enough resources to handle something like this. The only thing we can do is hope the wind will come down.”

Hundreds of homes and businesses have been destroyed. Two hospitals were evacuated and power outages are widespread throughout the county, The San Fransisco Chronicle reports.

“It’s just been a really rough night,” Cal Fire spokesman Dave Shew said. “It’s going to be pretty significant. There are some neighborhoods that got hit pretty hard with structures lost. … This is an ongoing situation that is not only going to last days but weeks.”
