Republican Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul formally endorsed Roy Moore in the Alabama senate election Tuesday, the campaign announced.

The Roy Moore for Senate Campaign said the two men had met during Moore’s recent trip to Washington, D.C., and Moore was looking forward to working with Paul in the Senate on national debt, border security and job growth, a press release stated.

“I am honored to receive the support and endorsement of Senator Rand Paul, for whom I have great admiration and respect as fellow defender of our conservative principles,” Moore said in the statement. “I look forward to working with him in the United States Senate to defend our Constitution, secure our borders, fix our national debt, and allow the free enterprise system to create more jobs across Alabama and the nation.”

Paul also praised Moore for defending the the Constitution, adding that more people like him are needed in the Capitol.

”Judge Roy Moore has spent a lifetime defending and standing up for the Constitution while fighting for the people of Alabama. We need more people in Washington, D.C. that will stand on principle and defend the Constitution,” Paul said in a statement. “I look forward to welcoming him to the Senate very soon.”

Moore beat out Luther Strange, the candidate endorsed by President Donald Trump, in the Alabama senate GOP primary in September. Moore, a former Alabama court chief justice, had to leave office in 2003 after he refused to remove a statue of the Ten Commandments from the state’s Supreme Court building, despite a federal ruling to do so.
