Democratic Rep. John Conyers is facing allegations of sexual misconduct, but just last month Rep. Maxine Waters referred to him as a champion for women.
“You know, there is a member of Congress who has been supportive of women for many, many, many years,” Waters said. “He is quiet, he is confident, he is powerful, but he has impeccable integrity on all of our issues. Give John Conyers a big round of applause.”
Waters also took special care to address women who have faced sexual harassment and assault.
“I just want to take time to focus on something that I think we need to focus on right now. It is very fortuitous that we are gathered here this afternoon in Detroit as we continue to recognize a record number of women who are boldly coming forward to reveal disturbing and grotesque acts of sexual harassment, assault and rape, often times at the hands of men who believed they were too rich and too powerful to ever be confronted or held accountable,” she said.
Buzzfeed News reported on Monday that Conyers settled a wrongful dismissal complaint for more than $27,000 after a woman alleged he fired her because she would not “succumb to [his] sexual advances.” (RELATED: REVEALED: Top Democrat Paid Off Sexual Harassment Accuser With $27K In Taxpayer Money)
In sworn affidavits, four former staffers describe Conyers is a serial sexual harasser who would prey on his employees. One woman states that Conyers asked her to “touch it,” referring to his penis, or he would find someone who would, and another alleges that he used taxpayer funds to fly women to meet him for affairs.
