It’s Thanksgiving Eve.

Families across the country are en-route to visit loved ones and friends for some warm holiday cheer. However, some families of wounded American service members will be spending the holidays away from home and in a hospital next to their injured sons or daughters, husbands or wives.

Many of those families will be at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, which is the nation’s largest military Hospital.

Wounded service members and their families received an unexpected treat on Wednesday, when they were able to give thanks and receive encouragement from Vice President Mike Pence and second lady Karen Pence.

Pence met privately with wounded members of the Army and their families doctors and caregivers. Some of the wounded service members were wheelchair-bound after amputation surgery according to reports. Pence signed casts and autographs, took pictures and met service dogs.

According to the AP:

Pence gave each one a special coin. His wife handed out charm bracelets for spouses. She also delivered flower arrangements to the hospitalized patients.

Pence told the military families:

“You give your best to America’s best. We’re all grateful for you and thankful for you. Happy Thanksgiving.”
