The White House rolled out its Christmas decorations this week.

However, visitors to the White House this holiday season will see a very unique Christmas tree with a very special purpose.

Upon entering the White House for a Christmas tour, visitors will see the Gold Star Tree. The Gold Star Tree will honor service members and their families, particularly those who have given their lives for our country. The tree will be decorated with gold stars and patriotic ribbon. The tree will also be interactive, allowing visitors to write holiday messages to be sent to service members digitally.

The tree is on display now, according to a White House press release:

In the East Wing, visitors find a tribute to our service members and their families with the Gold Star Family Tree, which has been decorated with gold stars and patriotic ribbon. Visitors are encouraged to write a message to their loved ones who are on duty or abroad on the digital tablets provided.

This is not the first time that a First Family has honored armed service members at Christmas. Other administrations have set up different trees to honor military families in different ways.

The first lady placing the Gold Star tree as the first thing visitors will see when entering the White House sends a powerful pro-military message all Americans can agree upon.
