Meryl Streep said Oprah Winfrey “doesn’t have a choice” and must run for president following her Golden Globes speech.
“She [Winfrey] launched a rocket tonight. I want her to run for president,” the 68-year-old actress told the Washington Post following the 75th annual event Sunday night held in Los Angeles. (RELATED: Rose McGowan Slams Meryl Streep For Silent Protest Planned For Golden Globes)
“I don’t think she had any intention [of declaring],” she added. “But now she doesn’t have a choice.”
“She runs a major company,” the actress continued. “She could lead the country. Instead of leading the country down.”
Winfrey got Hollywood and the political world buzzing following her acceptance speech Sunday night for the Cecile B. DeMille lifetime achievement award in which she praised the #MeToo movement.
“I want tonight to express gratitude to all the women who have endured years of abuse and assault because they, like my mother, had children to feed, and bills to pay, and dreams to pursue,” Winfrey shared. “For too long, women have not been heard or believed if they dared to speak their truth to the power of those men. But their time is up. Their time is up!”
