Sen. John McCain of Arizona urged his colleagues in Congress to stop criticizing and trying to stop Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election.

“The American people deserve to know all of the facts surrounding Russia’s ongoing efforts to subvert our democracy, which is why Special Counsel Mueller’s investigation must proceed unimpeded,” McCain said in a statement Friday. “Our nation’s elected officials, including the president, must stop looking at this investigation through the warped lens of politics and manufacturing partisan sideshows. If we continue to undermine our own rule of law, we are doing Putin’s job for him.”

The Arizona senator said if members of Congress continue to try to “undermine the rule of law, we are doing Putin’s job for him.”

McCain’s statement comes off the heels of The White House’s release of a highly-anticipated memo that alleges the Justice Department omitted critical information in an application for a spy warrant against a former Trump campaign advisor.

Republican leadership in Congress has done its best to separate Muller’s investigation from the memo, but reports have speculated that President Donald Trump wanted the memo to get released in an effort to help undermine Mueller’s investigation.
