The Amount Of Misinformation Katy Tur Put Out During This Gun Rant Is Mind-Boggling
MSNBC host Katy Tur put out a host of misinformation during a rant on guns in a Thursday segment, when she wondered why the Parkland shooter could buy a semiautomatic weapon but not a pistol.
“According to my reading and tell me if I’m wrong, he could not have bought a 9 millimeter Glock because he was not 21. He could not have bought a pistol which shoots people one by one by one by one, but he could walk in and legally buy a semiautomatic weapon,” Tur said on air.
“Why is the Glock federally regulated and a semiautomatic weapon, I’m sorry I’m getting angry about this, an AR-15 used over and over again to not murder one person or two people, but to murder dozens?” she added.
Tur’s monologue expressly ignores the fact that the overwhelming majority of handguns — like a Glock 9mm — are semiautomatic weapons that are easily concealed. In her segment, Tur claimed that a pistol “shoots people one by one by one,” falsely making a distinction between semiautomatic rifles and handguns that doesn’t exist.
The MSNBC host also showed a stunning lack of knowledge on the deadliness of firearms. Handguns were responsible for a whopping 72.24 percent of all firearm murders, according to the 2015 FBI Uniform Crime Reporting. Rifles on the other hand accounted for 3.84 percent of firearm murders.
Tur also speculated on bump stocks when there is no reason to believe that bump stocks were involved in the deadly shooting.
“Who knows if he used a bump stock, doesn’t really matter, and mow down children?” she asked.
Authorities arrested 19-year-old Nikolas Cruz and charged him with 17 counts of premeditated murder after he opened fire on a Parkland, Fla., school Wednesday.
