Olympic skiing sensation Mikaela Shiffrin’s boyfriend Mathieu Faivre was put on the first flight back to France after making some salty post-race comments on Sunday.
After he finished seventh place in the men’s giant slalom race, he was asked for his thoughts on the race where all seven finishers were from France – Faivre’s home country.
“If you only knew what I think about the group collectively,” he told an unassuming reporter. “I’m here to race for myself only.”
He also said he was “disgusted” with the giant slalom result and it felt “like a slap in the face.”
Predictably, the French skiing team didn’t take too kindly to this outburst and sent him packing Monday morning.
“Mathieu will return to France for disciplinary reasons,” the director for France men’s skiing said this morning. “He made remarks after the race that were not in the spirit of the team and will not be retained for the team event.”
Although the rest of his team probably wasn’t thrilled with his language, they desperately need him for some upcoming team races. Faivre was favored as a strong contender for another gold medal during the team alpine event, scheduled for this Saturday.
Faivre has since apologized for his “hot blooded” comments on both Instagram and Facebook.
“No one reacts in the same way to failure and I have to admit, coming from the south, I may tend to be hot blooded,” he said. “I did not want to disrespect anyone, I was extremely proud to represent my country and I thank all those who made this possible.”
Pretty wild that this guy defends himself just by claiming he’s from the South of France. It’s even more wild that people believe it. His Instagram has been flooded with French comments basically forgiving him and telling him to be strong. Hysterical. France will ban cat calling and public flirtation but are A-OK with stereotyping an entire region and forfeiting its chance at gold.
The French are wild. No word on whether Shiffrin and Faivre’s relationship has survived this little hiccup.
