During a media blitz Wednesday, Democratic New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo touted his progressive credentials and joked that his opponents might be working with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

“I believe when you go to the Pearly Gates and our Lord says, ‘Have you been a good progressive?’ He says, ‘Show me the list of what you got done,'” Cuomo said in an interview with New York Spectrum News 1 reporter Errol Louis Wednesday.

“And I have accomplished more progressive results in this state than have been accomplished by any administration and I believe that is factually, objectively irrefutable,” Cuomo said.

Cuomo faces a challenge in the gubernatorial Democratic nomination in from former “Sex in the City” star Cynthia Nixon. The actress is reportedly preparing to campaign for the Democratic nomination ahead of the September primary, NY1 reported Tuesday. Her strong name recognition and liberal activism could threaten Cuomo, who has served as governor since 2011.

When asked during a conference call with reporters if he thought New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio was encouraging Nixon to run, Cuomo joked that it might be someone even more nefarious.

“I think it was probably either the mayor of New York or Vladimir Putin,” Cuomo said. “I’m going to leave it to you great investigative reporters to follow the facts and ferret out the truth,” Cuomo said before releasing a belly laugh. “Russian interference?”

De Blasio denied that he was behind Nixon’s run, but several political aides close to the mayor are assisting Nixon’s exploratory campaign. Nixon has been considering mounting a primary challenge to Cuomo since the summer, but recent meetings with former de Blasio campaign aides Bill Hyers and Rebecca Katz indicate she is about to launch a gubernatorial campaign, The New York Times reports.
