Authorities investigating the mysterious discovery of 54 severed human hands in a small Siberian fishing spot say the morbid scene was not of  “criminal” origin.

Investigators searched the banks of the Amur River near Khabarovsk, a town near Russia’s southeastern border with China, after reports of a single human hand.

In their search they found a bag of 27 pairs of hands severed at the wrist, as well as bandage and shoe covers used in medical procedures, according to local media reports Thursday.

At least one of the hands has been fingerprinted and identified, and authorities are working on others. Authorities piled up the hands in the snow, and took grisly pictures of the scene.

Some speculated that the bag of human remains left in remote regions of the frozen riverbank, inaccessible by car, were evidence of organ trade. Local authorities determined in a statement that it was more likely to be from a nearby medical institution that didn’t dispose of the biomass properly

The Investigative Committee said “these biological items (human hands) do not have a criminal background,” according to the Siberian Times.
