President Donald Trump responded positively in a pair of tweets Wednesday morning to the news that North Korean leader secretly met with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing.
Kim, accompanied by his wife Ri Sol Ju, met with Xi and Madame Peng Liyuan in the Chinese capital earlier this week at the invitation of the Chinese leader. While in Beijing, Kim reportedly told Xi that he is committed to the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula and is eager to meet with U.S. and South Korean leadership to discuss a peaceful resolution to longstanding disputes.

While it does not appear that Beijing consulted Washington prior to the meeting, Xi delivered a personal message to Trump, briefing the president on talks with the North Korean leader. Chinese reports on the meeting in Beijing appear to confirm statements from South Korean diplomats asserting that Kim is seriously considering denuclearization and that he is ready to meet with the president.
For years and through many administrations, everyone said that peace and the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula was not even a small possibility. Now there is a good chance that Kim Jong Un will do what is right for his people and for humanity. Look forward to our meeting!

Received message last night from XI JINPING of China that his meeting with KIM JONG UN went very well and that KIM looks forward to his meeting with me. In the meantime, and unfortunately, maximum sanctions and pressure must be maintained at all cost!

As far as Trump’s meeting with Kim is concerned, the White House has yet to complete preparations for the summit.
“We are continuing to move forward. The offer was extended and accepted and we’re continuing to move forward in that process. We still don’t have a set time or date on that front,” White House press secretary Sarah Sanders told The Daily Caller Tuesday.
