President Donald Trump commuted the sentence of nonviolent drug offender Alice Johnson Wednesday at the request of reality TV star Kim Kardashian West.

“Despite receiving a life sentence, Alice worked hard to rehabilitate herself in prison, and act as a mentor to her fellow inmates,” the White House said in a statement. “Her Warden, Case Manager, and Vocational Training Instructor have all written letters in support of her clemency.”
Kardashian West met with Trump in the Oval Office recently to plead Johnson’s case. Kardashian-West first learned about Johnson, who is currently serving a life sentence for leading a multi-million dollar cocaine ring in the early 1990s, on Twitter. She has served more than 21 years in federal prison.
I would like to thank President Trump for his time this afternoon. It is our hope that the President will grant clemency to Ms. Alice Marie Johnson who is serving a life sentence for a first-time, non-violent drug offense.

Kardashian-West became aware of Johnson’s case on Twitter after watching a Mic documentary about her.
