Netflix is extending a licensing agreement to keep the recently deceased Anthony Bourdain’s show “Parts Unknown” on the platform, the company announced Tuesday.
The contract with the highly popular travel documentary series was set to expire on June 16. Around 7,000 fans petitioned Netflix to maintain the show’s availability for streaming, but it’s not explicitly clear if public demand was a main part of the decision.
“Those who see his show understand that all of us, from across countries, classes, cultures, or creeds are far more alike, than we are different,” the petition reads. “Netflix, this show isn’t just entertaining. It is heartwarming, it is honest and it benefits human kind. Please keep it on the air.”
Netflix declined to elaborate to The Daily Caller News Foundation on the following statement:
Some fans have noticed that Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown was scheduled to come off Netflix US on June 16. As of today, we’ve extended our agreement that will keep Parts Unknown on the service for months to come.
Bourdain, who rose to stardom after he wrote the book “Kitchen Confidential,” which was published in 2000, passed away on June 8 from suicide in Strasbourg, France, around the time of filming for the show. New episodes for the 11th season have been airing on Sundays and CNN, its original network, decided to continue broadcasting it following his death.
It remains to be seen if other new episodes potentially recorded will still be shown to the public.
