An overwhelming majority of Republicans approved of how U.S. President Donald Trump handled his Monday meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin after constant criticism from Democrats.
Seventy-nine percent of Republicans approved of Trump’s joint press conference with Putin, compared to only 18 percent who said they disapproved of Trump’s conference, according to the Axios/SurveyMonkey poll released Thursday.
However, Democrats felt differently about the press conference, with 91 percent of voters disapproving and only 7 percent saying they approved.
Trump sent out a tweet after the press conference, saying people in the intelligence community loved his conference with Putin in Helsinki. Trump said the two got along and their positive relationship “truly bothered many haters who wanted to see a boxing match.” (RELATED: Trump Approved Press Conference Of Russian Indictments To Strengthen Hand Against Putin)
So many people at the higher ends of intelligence loved my press conference performance in Helsinki. Putin and I discussed many important subjects at our earlier meeting. We got along well which truly bothered many haters who wanted to see a boxing match. Big results will come!

The poll was conducted between July 16 and 17 with 2,100 adults in the U.S. and had a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.
