A person claiming to be the son of a prominent Minnesota-based environmental activist is accusing Rep. Keith Ellison of physically assaulting his mother while the two were in a relationship.

Ellison physically assaulted and psychologically abused Sierra Club activist Karen Monahan while the two were in a relationship, according to Austin Aslim Monahan, who claims to be Karen’s son. Austin Monahan also claims his mother convinced him not to make the incidents public because it would not be in her best interests.

“My brother and I watched our mom come out of pure hell after getting out of her relationship with Keith Ellison,” Austin wrote in a Facebook post Saturday before detailing the nature of the abuse. His post comes as Ellison runs attorney general in Minnesota.

“I was using my moms computer trying to download something and I clicked on a file, I found over 100 text and twitters messages and video almost 2 min long that showed Keith Ellison dragging my mama off the bed by her feet, screaming and calling her a ‘fucking bitch’ and telling her to get the fuck out of his house,” he wrote.

Austin added: “We were ready to go public but our mom begged us not to and she along with others convinced us it wasn’t in our moms best interest.” Ellison is denying the allegations.

“Karen and I were in a long-term relationship which ended in 2016, and I still care deeply for her well-being,” he wrote Sunday in a press statement. This video does not exist because I never behaved in this way and any characterization otherwise is false.”

While Karen has avoided publicly accusing Ellison of any wrongdoing, she did retweet a post from one of Ellison’s opponents, Debra Hilstrom, asking the Democratic lawmaker to answer for the allegations. (RELATED: Keith Ellison To Run For Minnesota Attorney General)

“I am so proud of my son for his courage. But this situation impacted me. If you have anything to say, please say it me and leave him out of it. No nasty comments to him,” Karen wrote in the retweet.

Ellison tweeted several photos of Karen and Austin in 2016.

Ellison became the deputy head of the Democratic National Committee in 2017 is now running in a packed crowd to become Minnesota’s first Muslim attorney general. The state’s primary election is Tuesday, Aug. 14.

The Minnesota congressman denied the allegations Saturday afternoon.
