An Arizona Democratic congressional candidate won a seven-candidate primary Tuesday after being booed for raising her hand in support of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) at a debate in July.
Former Rep. Ann Kirkpatrick’s Republican opponent is yet to be determined because the 2nd Congressional District primary was too close to call as of Wednesday, reported the Arizona Daily Star. The race’s winner will take Arizona Republican Rep. Martha McSally’s vacated seat as she runs for Senate.
Democrats have an eye on flipping the seat because the 2nd Congressional District is considered purple.
Kirkpatrick was booed for her stance on ICE at a July 19 debate featuring several candidates for Arizona’s 2nd Congressional District. She was also shouted down at the debate after she said she disagreed with the anti-Trump official rhetoric of California Democratic Rep. Maxine Waters.
Kirkpatrick issued a statement on July 23 that seems to go against what she stood for at the debate.
“This morning, Fox News and other outlets put out false reports on my position on ICE without a single word from me,” Kirkpatrick said in the statement. “Here is where I stand. ICE needs top-to-bottom reform. Trump’s policies — especially around family separation — are illegal and should end immediately.”
Things got weird when “Fox & Friends First” tried to interview Kirkpatrick about her views on ICE. A Massachusetts state senator named Barbara L’Italien went on air instead and spoke out against family separation at the border before revealing she was not Kirkpatrick. Kirkpatrick served as the U.S. representative for Arizona’s 1st Congressional District from 2013 to 2017. She ran against the late Republican Arizona Sen. John McCain in 2016 and lost, according to Ballotpedia.
