After Republican Utah Sen. Mitt Romney lost to former President Barack Obama in the 2012 presidential election, the Republican Party released a post-election autopsy report that concluded “comprehensive” immigration reform needed to be an important part of the party’s future. “It does not matter what we say about education, jobs or the economy; if Hispanics think we do not want them here, they will close their ears to our policies,” the memo read.
