Police are investigating an incident Monday where an off-duty officer reportedly shot two people, killing one, and then apparently killed herself.

Authorities suspect Officer Tiffani Gatson, who worked for the department in Greece, New York, a suburb of Rochester, of fatally shooting Angely Solis, and injuring a third woman, according to a press release from the New York Attorney General’s Office. Officers received a call around 7:20 p.m. saying that gunshots were heard on Costar Street in Greece, WHEC reported.

Police found all three women with gunshot wounds and recovered a Smith & Wesson 9mm handgun, which they concluded was not Gatson’s service weapon, the release noted.

Solis, 27, was pronounced dead at the scene, but Gatson, 29, and the third victim were rushed to the hospital, WHEC reported. Gatson, who was the first female African-American officer in the Greece police force, succumbed to her reportedly self-inflicted injuries shortly after arriving. All three women were apparently relatives who lived in the house together, according to the outlet. “Unfortunately, we have seen events of this nature occur all too frequently and struggle to find answers in the aftermath. The effects are far-reaching, from those who have lost loved ones to others throughout law enforcement organizations when a police officer commits such a horrible act, to our entire community… Allowing people to grieve is of paramount importance to me and providing the appropriate level of support within our organization,” Greece Police Chief Michael Wood told the outlet.
