An elderly Texas woman claims to have received the first speeding ticket of her 66-year life for going just two miles per hour over the speed limit.

Cindy Nguyen told local news she received a citation from a Houston Police Department officer for driving 37 mph in a 35 mph speed zone.

Nguyen’s husband, Omar Sharif, called on Houston police to focus on more serious crimes. “My biggest concern is this is just a misuse of the resources and taxpayer money not going to the right place. Crime is skyrocketing in Houston,” Sharif said.

Sharif also noted that the information written on the ticket was false. Nguyen was pulled over and ticketed on Jan. 3, 2023, but the citation lists Dec. 31, 2023, as the date.

Carmen Roe, a Houston local news legal analyst, mentioned that traffic citations may rise during the holiday season. “You’re more likely to be stopped for going 1 or 2 miles over the speed limit during this time of year, albeit frustrating to those just out there doing their shopping and things,” Roe explained. She also noted that police have the authority to ticket any motorists who exceed the speed limit, even by a single mile per hour.

“Cases like this, particularly just a few miles over the speed limit, they go away the first day you show up in court,” Roe added, encouraging Miss Nguyen to take fight this citation in court.

Houston Police Department has yet to publicly comment on Nguyen’s story.
