Chino Valley Unified School District Board president Sonja Shaw told California Attorney General Rob Bonta to “bring it” after he filed a lawsuit against the district Monday over a policy requiring schools to inform parents about their child’s preferred pronouns, according to Courthouse News Service.

Bonta’s lawsuit argued that the policy, which was passed in July by the school board, unfairly targets transgender and “gender nonconforming” students. Shaw responded, saying that the lawsuit was simply another example of “government overreach” from the “political cartel of Bonta, (Governor Gavin) Newsom and (State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony) Thurmond,” according to Courthouse News Service. “We again had to learn firsthand from reporters of their lawsuit,” Shaw said in a statement. “Bonta can’t even cite a law we are breaking in the documents and I find it a joke. He knows better and this is another ploy to stop all the districts around California from adopting a commonsense legal policy. We will stand our ground and protect our children with all we can because we are not breaking the law. Parents have a constitutional right in the upbringing of their children. Period. Bring it.”

The district’s policy requires that the school informs parents if their child is “accessing sex-segregated school programs and activities” or has begun to use bathrooms that don’t match their biological sex, according to the rule. Bonta, however, claimed that the new rule is “unconstitutionally discriminating against and violating the privacy rights of LGBTQ+ students,” according to a statement in a press release.

The policy was applauded and criticized by parents and public officials, who spoke during public comments sections of board meetings. Thurmond also spoke during the meetings before Shaw had to have security remove him after he tried to speak beyond his allotted time.

“You will not bully us here in Chino,” Shaw told Thurmond as he was leaving.

Bonta, Newsom and Thurmond did not immediately respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment.
