Republican Indiana Rep. Jim Banks and a group of House Republicans sent a letter Thursday to Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen and the Executive Director of the World Bank Adriana Kugler calling for answers over millions of dollars of funding to Chinese companies that are on U.S. sanctions lists for military and human rights abuses.

Every Republican member of the House Select Committee on Strategic Competition between the United States and the Chinese Communist Party signed the letter, which was first obtained by the Daily Caller. In the letter, the lawmakers call for an explanation of the World Bank sending $25 million to Chinese companies that are on U.S. sanctions lists.

The lawmakers also ask why China has been receiving 30 percent of World Bank contract funding for over a decade and if they believe that China’s share of World Bank contract funding suggests that the World Bank must change its procurement process.

“We write to raise concerns about the People’s Republic of China’s (PRC) influence at the World Bank and the disproportionate share of World Bank contracts awarded to PRC companies, including those tied to human rights abuses and sanctioned by the United States. We urge you to press the World Bank to reform its procurement practices to allow for a more level playing field and help ensure that U.S. taxpayers are not financing projects that undermine U.S. national interests,” the lawmakers wrote in the letter. “Taxpayers are indirectly funding the single greatest military threat to the United States. The Biden administration must either do its job and prevent international organizations like the World Bank, W.H.O. and U.N. Human Rights Council from working against U.S. interests, or we need to stop paying for them. Republicans on the House Select Committee on China are unified in opposing American financial support for the Chinese Communist regime,” Banks told the Caller before sending the letter.
