In America, we take free speech for granted — or at least we used to. Alternatively, it’s well known that Europe doesn’t have the First Amendment, that unapproved speech can legally be shut down without much fuss. We would like to think our Constitution shields us from this sort of tyranny, but as the COVID years show, we can no longer afford to take our rights for granted.
