SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — When Ben Berkowitz wanted some graffiti on his street cleaned up, he called the city. They put him on hold. As he sat there, he found himself thinking that his neighbors had probably called in with the same complaint, but he had no way of knowing. (more)

I’m an advocate of separating church and state, not because I necessarily worry the latter might suppress the former, but because I want to protect the integrity of the church and related institutions in the face of federal encroachment. Unfortunately, the buzz phrase “separation of church and state” has degenerated into a leftist talking point. This is in large part thanks to groups like the ACLU and various Supreme Court decisions — especially Everson v. Board of Education, which mandated a “wall of separation” between all church and government relations (despite prior state-level involvement), policed by the federal government. (more)

Nothing changes so much as it stays the same. The Democrats continue to be relentless in their determination to destroy this country, and Republicans, despite just coming off an historic electoral victory nationwide, still don’t get it. (more)

Barack Obama would like to chalk the 2010 elections up to a weak economy and voters not understanding what a great job he did in preventing an even bigger economic collapse. It suits him to see things that way. He can continue to blame the economy on his predecessor and say that he saved us from the abyss. That’s his story and he’s sticking to it. Yet, if the weak economy were responsible for Democrats’ losses, then, historically speaking, Democrats should have lost only 20 to 30 House seats. Yet they lost 2 to 3 times that many. Why? Because voters aren’t just upset about the economy. They’re upset with the recklessly expensive and unwanted command-and-control policies that Obama pushed down their throats. (more)

Advocates of Big Government are forever creative in concocting new justifications for old programs. Supporters of more military spending are no different. One of the most unique arguments is that a bigger Pentagon budget is necessary to simultaneously protect and suppress the Europeans. (more)
Female independent voters may be the ultimate swing voting group. These voters are open to supporting candidates of any party, and are likely to turn out on Election Day. This makes them a key target audience for any competitive campaign. A new poll conducted by Douglas E. Schoen, LLC and commissioned by Independent Women’s Voice (IWV), which is a non-partisan, non-profit group, gauges the current mood and convictions of political independents. The responses from female independents are particularly telling: they indicate that America is ready for a significant change in political leadership. (more)
Watch out, Wall Street. Back off, Big Oil. You’re getting muscled off the top of “Government’s Most Wanted” list by a pair of tycoons on opposite ends of the country, and they’re doing it all before bedtime. (more)
Much of the news in the past month has focused on the pervasive corruption in our nation’s capital. Stories such as those about Maxine Waters’ alleged malfeasance have garnered prominent positions in the headlines. But it is odd that the media has ignored an even larger issue of corruption: the government’s self-interested policies regarding General Motors (more)
