I wonder if President Obama read what so many others did last month in The Washington Post: that Virginia will enjoy a $220 million budget surplus despite the struggling economy. If not the Post, then surely the President glanced over a recent issue of The Economist in which Governor Chris Christie is congratulated for closing “an unprecedented $11 billion budget gap…without increasing taxes.” (more)

Even though Tuesday’s slate of elections featured far more primaries than actual Republican-vs.-Democrat contests, you could be forgiven for having the impression that Republicans had a terrible night. Despite a variety of factors that made the special election in Pennsylvania’s 12th congressional district not particularly useful as a bellwether, it was touted today as proof that Republicans will be unfortunate underachievers in the fall elections. 1.) The EPA is trying to kill us all — “Pilots, airlines and airports are warning the government’s proposed environmental restrictions on deicing fluid used to keep planes from freezing up and crashing could pose serious safety risks,” reports The Daily Caller’s Jonathan Strong. In order to protect nearby bodies of water, like streams and ditches and retention ponds, the EPA has proposed new regulations that would limit the amount of deicing fluid that airports can use to keep planes from crashing to 25 gallons. An EPA spokeswoman said that her organization “is concerned about the safety of the traveling public and the operational challenges that airports and airlines face in efficiently serving air traveler.” It appears the EPA is more concerned about satisfying the mermaid-huggers over at–well, who knows where these anti-airplane freaks are hiding. Yesterday, President Obama proposed plans to open offshore drilling and exploration along the southern Atlantic coast, a portion of the eastern Gulf of Mexico and some of the coast of Alaska. This is a welcome step forward by the previously reluctant administration. Remember that President Bush lifted the ban on drilling offshore in June 2008 and the Congress followed by passing legislation in October 2008 when the cost of gasoline hit $4 per gallon. Having advocated for seven years for the federal government to allow Virginia to safely explore for oil and gas off our coast, it is good to see the president following the law. (more)
