I’ll admit to not being an economist; but as the son of a banker, I have almost an innate appreciation for the importance of meeting obligations. The recent discussion in Washington about raising the debt ceiling has brought about serious concerns from the financial community about the consequences of not doing so. (more)
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush says he isn’t ruling out a possible presidential run in 2016. (more)
Listening to the local news on the radio recently, I heard a report about how newly elected Baltimore County Executive Kevin Kamenetz plans to save $8 million by, among other things, merging the “Office of Sustainability” with the Department of Environmental Protection and Resource Management. In the private sector, the capstone of your career is marked with a laudatory going-away party, perhaps a gold watch or other recognition of your years of service, and your retirement — it’s a clean break. The company goes on with its business and you go on with your life. (more)
General Brent Scowcroft (ret.), the former National Security Advisor to both Presidents Gerald Ford and George H.W. Bush, has been working the phones trying to secure Republican Senate support for the ratification of the New START nuclear disarmament treaty with Russia. He said he’s “cautiously optimistic” but said he was frustrated with the opposition he’s been hearing from Republicans. (more)
On Monday, President Obama made a statement claiming that a structure for an agreement was made with the GOP to extend the Bush tax cuts for all Americans for at least another two years. Unemployment benefits and other such goodies were to be exchanged for doing so. Nevertheless, I was more than stunned to see this president agree to such terms. I knew that the left would be irate and it turns out they are. (more)
Does anyone else notice the eerie similarities between Julian Assange and Bill Clinton? Aside from the anti-American attitudes they both share, Assange exposed U.S. national security secrets, as did Clinton while he was president. Both were undone by claims of various forms of sexual harassment, which, however disturbing, were minor compared to the subversive activities in which they were routinely engaged. Both are self-aggrandizing, needy narcissists who require power in order to bed women. And both victimized Hillary Clinton. (more)
Though the John Birch Society is making a comeback through the Tea Party movement, at least some conservatives question whether the group really belongs apart of the movement. (more)
I have known George W. Bush for over 45 years — since we were at Yale College in the mid-1960s together (he was a year behind me and we were fraternity brothers at Delta Kappa Epsilon). I am almost finished reading his memoir, Decision Points. And my overwhelming reaction is that Bush has changed little as a human being since back then — non-judgmental of others and possessed of an inner faith in himself that makes him comfortable with all kinds of people. Donald Trump would make a great president. Unabashedly pro-American, the toughest business negotiator in the country and with name ID and charisma greater than any of those currently contemplating the race, Trump would bring excitement to the 2012 race. Stoutly pro-tax cut and libertarian on social issues like abortion, Trump is a Republican with the business know-how to turn the country’s economy around. In recent weeks Trump has been urged to run and has said he is considering it. (more)
LOS ANGELES — Republicans are relishing the coming of a new day on Capitol Hill. But across the country in California, the party of Nixon and Reagan is drifting toward obscurity. (more)
Let me start off by saying that I am a fan of former President George H.W. Bush, and I truly respect his opinion on a host of political issues. The elder Bush was a great chief executive, and Americans would be fortunate to have him sitting in the White House today. But his recent appearance on Larry King Live left me scratching my head, and pondering the fate of a prominent Alaska resident. (more)
In light of President Obama’s accident while playing basketball Friday, here is a quick look back at other presidential medical mishaps: (more)
(CNN) – Sarah Palin may not have the biggest fan in former first lady Barbara Bush. (more)
When the Simpson-Bowles Obama Commission “chairman’s mark” came out last week, there were far too many conservatives who were too quick to say nice things about it. Blinded by lower marginal tax rates and some entitlement reforms, they chose to ignore the fact that the plan is a ten-year tax hike of over $1 trillion, and would saddle taxpayers with a taxes-to-GDP ratio of 21 percent, the highest in American history. A week later, the Rivlin-Domenici commission released their report with a $500 billion tax hike. Americans for Tax Reform actually produced our own (balanced) budget plan that cuts spending and cuts taxes in a reasonable way. But it’s worth reflecting on what too many on the Right said about the “higher taxes” plans for almost-balanced budgets. (more)
President Obama dropped a bipartisan bombshell today, announcing he will award the Presidential Medal of Freedom next year to ex-President George H.W. Bush. (more)
President Obama invoked the name of former President Ronald Reagan Thursday as he continued to push Senate Republicans to approve a nuclear arms reduction treaty with Russia before the end of the year. (more)
Cap and trade may be dead in the Senate, according to newly installed Democratic West Virginia Sen. Joe Manchin, but Republicans warn the news of its demise have been exaggerated. (more)
