The Houston Texans have reportedly started extension negotiations with quarterback Deshaun Watson.

According to Ed Werder, the team and their star quarterback have started “very preliminary” talks on a new deal. (RELATED: David Hookstead Is The True King In The North When It Comes To College Football)

The Texans have to do whatever it takes to lock up Watson for the foreseeable future. The man is an absolute star and he’s the face of the franchise.

Given how bad the quarterback market is in the NFL, you have to secure your starter once you find one. You don’t have a choice.

Watson is one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL, and he has at least another decade of football in front of him. That means he’s going to get a fat extension.

Will the Texans make him the highest paid quarterback in the league? It’s not impossible to envision. Generally speaking, the next guy to get paid is the highest guy to get paid.

No matter what the Texans do, securing a long term deal with Watson has to be high on the priority list. When you have a passer as talented as him, you can’t risk losing him.
