‘Brand Has Been Weak For A While’ — Democratic Rep. Elissa Slotkin Admits There Is ‘Problem’ With Party’s Message

Democratic Michigan Rep. Elissa Slotkin said Tuesday morning that there are some serious problems with her party’s messaging and branding.

“I think that the reason why it’s relatively easy to paint all Democrats with a broad brush is because people don’t know, always, what we stand for. I mean, I wanna be frank that we have a problem, especially in places like Michigan where people don’t know what it means to be a Democrat,” Slotkin said in an interview with MSNBC’s Stephanie Ruhle when asked about about the future of the Democratic Party.

“The brand has been weak for a while. And therefore, every two years, you can just superimpose whatever hit is the most popular thing and you’re gonna convince some people that that’s what all Democrats are about. So, while I don’t love some of the slogans, I don’t love a lot of what I’m hearing from some of my colleagues who are further left of me, I think that we have a bigger strategic problem and we need to own that as Democrats,” Slotkin continued.


Democrats in the House reportedly voiced their concerns about the future of the party with Pelosi in a Thursday caucus call, as Democrats did not expand their majority but instead lost several seats. Democratic Virginia Rep. Democrats in the House lost a number of seats they were hoping to win on election night, a blow to the party’s hopes of expanding their majority, as some were projecting Democrats to pick up as many as 15 seats.
