A passenger died and many more were injured when a Singapore Airlines flight flew into severe turbulence causing it to drop thousands of feet in just seconds.

Singapore Airlines flight SQ321 from London Heathrow to Singapore experienced severe turbulence resulting in the death of one person and several injuries, according to a statement on the company’s Facebook page. Approximately 211 passengers and 18 crew were on board the Boeing 777-300ER, which was diverted to Bangkok Airport and landed on May 21 at around 3:45 p.m. local time.

The airline offered its condolences to the deceased’s family and said it is “sending a team to Bangkok to provide any additional assistance needed,” according to a CNN report. “We are working with the local authorities in Thailand to provide the necessary medical assistance, and sending a team to Bangkok to provide any additional assistance needed,” the airline added in a statement.

“I am deeply saddened to learn about the incident onboard Singapore Airlines flight SQ321 from London Heathrow to Singapore. The plane had encountered severe turbulence en route and had to be diverted to Bangkok. Singapore Airlines has confirmed that there are injuries and one fatality on board,” Singapore’s Minister for Transport Chee Hong Tat said in a Facebook post, the Guardian Series reported. The fatal accident is just one of a number of high-profile cases involving Boeing aircraft in recent months. Problems at the company came to broad public consciousness in January when the door of an Alaska Airlines Boeing 737 Max-9 aircraft was blown off mid-flight. The safety concerns preceded the announcement of a first-quarter company net loss of $355 million.
