With Wisconsin Democratic Sen. Herb Kohl announcing his plans to retire last week, there has been some speculation that Republican House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan might make a run for the soon-to-be vacated Senate seat.

On Sunday’s “State of the Union” on CNN, the Wisconsin Republican told host Candy Crowley he was surprised by Kohl’s announcement and explained his decision making process on whether he will mount a campaign for Senate.

“Well, Herb just announced this Friday,” Ryan said. “It was a bit of a surprise to all of us. And so my family, supporters – we just started digesting this. I plan on making an announcement very quickly. I don’t want to dwindle on this but we’re just beginning to process this information.”

Ryan told Crowley to expect to hear from him this week on his decision.
