Amy Poehler fundraises for Planned Parenthood

As the Planned Parenthood defunding debate rages on, “Parks and Recreation” star Amy Poehler has come to the defense of the embattled organization. The Huffington Post reports that Poehler wrote a fundraising letter released on Monday, praising Planned Parenthood president Cecile Richards as “smart,” “tough,” and “totally dedicated to fighting for women’s health.”

Poehler continued to lavish praise on the  group, saying that “Every single doctor and nurse and receptionist and volunteer who shows up at a Planned Parenthood health center” is “totally awesome.” (Pregnant Tina Fey would like ‘a bit of a breather’ before next season of ‘30 Rock’)

Calling for donations “to make sure Planned Parenthood is strong enough to protect [patients'] rights and their health,” the former SNL star even commented on recent efforts by pro-life politicians to defund the organization. Poehler stressed that supporting Planned Parenthood is particularly important “because we are having a moment right now when people are trying to come up with new ways to make the lives of all the folks who rely on Planned Parenthood pretty difficult.”

While defunding Planned Parenthood never made its way through Congress, multiple states have struck the group’s funding from their budgets. Planned Parenthood is currently suing Indiana and Kansas to recapture the lost funds.

Amy, I know your intentions are good, but Planned Parenthood is the last place that needs your money, and indeed will not do a thing to help young people practice sexual responsibility. It is the massive welfare state itself that perpetuates the very problems it claims to remedy. And despite its characterization as a non-profit, Planned Parenthood is a for-profit outfit that is by no stretch the only source of care for anyone. In April, the annual report of Planned Parenthood Federation of America revealed that it had a total income of $1.02 billion—with reported profits of nearly $115 million. Taxpayers kicked in more than $336 million worth of government grants and contracts at both the state and federal levels. That’s a third of Planned Parenthood’s budget. What’d we get for our money? Roughly 280,000 abortions, and 30% of all U.S. pregnancies are outside of wedlock. And Planned Parenthood is FAR from ‘the only place’ for women to go for birth control, abortions and overall health care. In the U.S. we have Free Clinics, Community Clinics and Hospitals and Medicaid allows anyone to receive care almost anywhere. additionally, illegal immigrant parents pore into the country and receive everything for free, then declare their child a citizen. This country is in financial ruin because of this entitlement and no accountability mentality. And don’t give me that crap about rape and incest, because the very few women who find themselves in those horrific circumstances are not helped at all by PP, they just blend in with everyone else. Besides, PP doesn’t report them as a matter of its own policy. Why not raise money to support School Choice, so urban parents can send their children to better performing schools? That would be true compassion, and it might actually help kids make better choices. If that happened, they wouldn’t need Democrats.

And I care about her fundraising efforts bcos….she’s on TV? her affiliation with Ms. Fey?
When are we going to stop referring to abortions as a women’s health issue?
It is a choice the majority of the time to correct an absence of forethought and planning and the percentage of abortions based on rapes and threats to the mother’s health is small.
I personally don’t feel it’s my responsibility to pay for anothers lack of responsibility and if Ms. Poehler and Ms. Fey want to then perhaps they could form an abortion fund and all their like minded friends could join and contribute but it isn’t a federal government or taxation issue.

I have a lot of respect for anyone in the entertainment world that uses their celebrity to fund raise for causes they believe in and avoid assaulting my ears with their criticisms (usually not so intelligent, too). This is borderline, but at least she is standing up for what she believes in more than simply using her “fame” to only take pot shots.

Good for her, she should have fundraisers, that way people that believe in Planned Parenthood can contribute, and people like me don’t have to see their taxes go to support something they don’t beleive in
