Despite easily winning a gubernatorial election in a dark blue state on Tuesday, Republican New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie is on the receiving end of some veiled and not-so-veiled shots about his weight lately.
One example of the latter just came from “Hardball” anchor Chris Matthews.
Matthews, during a question and answer session following a keynote address at an event called Thinkfest in Philadelphia.
Philadelphia magazine editor Tom McGrath asked Matthews for his take on Christie as a potential 2016 candidate, but before he could get the question out, Matthews made the joke.
MCGRATH: Two days after Election Day, Chris Christie has crushed his opponent. Is he going to be the Republican —
MATTHEWS: The one I feel for is his wife.
MCGRATH: Why’s that?
MATTHEWS: Did you just say, “crush?” I mean, use your imagination. Use your imagination — you poor dear, you poor dear.
