It was 2008, and the Democratic Party was in the middle of a hotly contested presidential primary contest between then-New York Sen. Hillary Clinton and then-Illinois Sen. Barack Obama.
David Shuster, who was filling in for then-MSNBC host Tucker Carlson, suggested that Chelsea Clinton was being “sort of being pimped out” in support of her mom, Hillary.
Shuster wound up being forced to apologize and was given a two-week suspension by the network for those remarks.
Fast-forward five years to last week, when MSNBC host Martin Bashir suggested someone urinate and defecate on former Republican Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin.
Bashir apologized for those remarks, but has not been suspended. Shuster suggested one of two explanations for the lack of discipline: either Bashir has naked pictures of MSNBC president Phil Griffin or there is double for Republicans and Democrats on the network.
