Giuliana Rancic is now saying that a comment she made while hosting E!’s “Fashion Police” was heavily edited out of context to the point that it sounded racist.
After the Oscars, Rancic had commented about a former Disney star’s dreadlocks she wore on the red carpet, which some said were racist and demanded she apologize, which she did. (RELATED: Here Is Giuliana Rancic’s ‘Racist’ Comments, And Her Apology That Followed)
On the “Today” show Tuesday, Rancic explained what she actually said versus what aired on TV.
Here’s the comment that aired:
“She just has such a tiny frame that this hair, to me, overwhelms her. I feel like she smells like patchouli oil. Or weed! Yeah, maybe weed?”
Here’s Rancic’s comment in full:
“I love Zendaya’s style and I love when she has the little hair, she just had it. She has such a tiny frame that this hair to me overwhelms her, it’s really heavy it overwhelms her [and it’s just like too Boho. Zendaya is more high fashion. The hair to me, on her, is making her a little boho] like I feel like she smells like patchouli oil and weed.
And here’s what she told Savannah Guthrie on Tuesday.
“You know, I made a reference to the hippie culture,” she said.
“I talked about patchouli oil, which is a hippie perfume. And in the editing process, some of the gestures I made, some of the things I said were taken out for time. I made peace signs, I said ‘bohemian’ twice—those were taken out for time. So when the joke aired, some people were offended by it.” (RELATED: Giuliana Rancic Says She Got Death Threats Over Zendaya Comments)
E! has currently placed “Fashion Police” on hiatus after hosts Kathy Griffin and Kelly Osbourne quit.
