Ted Cruz Opposes Gay Marriage Even Though He Claims He Doesn’t Hate Gay People

Hang onto your hats, folks. We’re about to take a trip to the weird world of Republican cuh-RAY-zies!

Maggie Haberman, NYT:

Ted Cruz Is Guest of Two Gay Businessmen

Senator Ted Cruz has positioned himself as a strong opponent of same-sex marriage, urging pastors nationwide to preach in support of marriage as an institution between a man and a woman, which he said was “ordained by God.”

But on Monday night, at a reception for him at the Manhattan apartment of two prominent gay hoteliers, the Texas senator and Republican presidential hopeful struck quite a different tone.

During the gathering, according to two people present, Mr. Cruz said he would not love his daughters any differently if one of them was gay…

The dinner and “fireside chat” for about a dozen people with Mr. Cruz and his wife, Heidi, was at the Central Park South penthouse of Mati Weiderpass and Ian Reisner, longtime business partners who were once a couple and who have been pioneers in the gay hospitality industry.

That’s just insane. How can you oppose gay marriage without hating gay people? Everybody knows that if you believe anything in the Bible, that means you want gays to be stoned to death or thrown off tall buildings. It’s safe to prejudge Christians that way, as long as they’re also Republicans.

How can Ted Cruz oppose marriage equality, and then strike quite a different tone and proclaim his unconditional love for his family? Especially while he’s sitting in a gay guy’s house? What is he, nuts?

Well done, Maggie Haberman. You’ve proven that Ted Cruz doesn’t conform to your prejudices.

Also, last year somebody died of a drug overdose in that same apartment. So you know what that means.

Seriously. You know what that means, right? Please tell us.

P.S. Ermagersh! Ted Cruz Has Gay Friends — and Supporters!!! “Though this may be difficult for some reporters to grasp, there are a lot of people for whom gay marriage is not the Great Litmus Test of the Ages.”
