Republican Ohio Gov. John Kasich argued that Kim Davis, the Kentucky clerk who is in jail for refusing is issues same-sex marriage licenses, is a “government employee” who “has to comply” with the Supreme Court ruling.

Kasich, appearing on ABC’s “This Week” with George Stephanopoulos on Sunday explained that while he believes in traditional marriage Davis should “follow the law.” (RELATED: Huckabee: Gavin Newsom Ignored The Law, Nothing Happened, But When Conservatives Do They Go To Jail)

George Stephanopoulos: Mike Huckabee earlier in the program said he stands by Kim Davis’ decision not to issue those marriage licenses, do you agree with that?

John Kasich: No, I don’t agree with him. I think, the court has spoken; the court has ruled. As everyone knows, or as most people know, I believe in traditional marriage, but the court has ruled. But George, this is one other big issue here, we have a lot of young people who sit on the fence on an issue like this, and they also think about their belief in God, and you know, for me, I think we need to talk a lot about the dos, about humility, about helping our neighbor, about the need to live a life bigger than ourselves. And when we see these kind of battles going on, I get afraid that it turns people off to the idea of faith in God, what it means to be a Christian. For me, it’s given me a solid foundation to deal with the strong winds in life. To be a better person, better guy. Now, I respect the fact that this lady doesn’t agree but she’s also a government employee, she’s not running a church. I wouldn’t force this on a church but in terms of her responsibility I think she has to comply, I don’t think, I don’t like the fact that she’s sitting in a jail, that’s just absurd as well, but I think she should follow the law.
