Donald Trump has hit 50 percent for the first time in a national poll among Republican voters, besting his closest opponent by 24 points as the New York businessman creeps closer to the GOP nomination.

Trump leads the Republican field with 50 percent, followed by Texas. Sen [crscore]Ted Cruz[/crscore] at 26 percent, and Ohio Gov. John Kasich at 17 percent, according to an NBC News/SurveyMonkey poll released Tuesday. The poll also shows that 58 percent of Republicans think that if Trump wins the most delegates, but not the majority, he should still get the nomination.

Hillary Clinton leads Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders by 10 points, 52 percent to 42 percent. In a hypothetical general election matchup, Clinton leads Trump 44 percent to 36 percent. However, 19 percent of those polled responded, “I don’t know.”

The NBC/SurveyMonkey poll surveyed 2,633 Republican voters, 3,168 Democratic voters, and a total sample of 10,707 voters. The margins of error are respectively 2.6 percent, 2.3 percent, and 1.3 percent.
