Attorney General Loretta Lynch and FBI director James Comey will testify in front of Congress, two House committee chairmen announced Wednesday.
Comey will appear before the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee on Thursday specifically to discuss the FBI’s Clinton email investigation, Utah Rep. Jason Chaffetz said.
And according to Virginia Rep. Bob Goodlatte, Lynch will appear next Tuesday, July 12, at a House Judiciary Committee hearing.
“Congress and the American people have a right to understand the depth and breadth of the FBI’s investigation,” Chaffetz said in a statement announcing Comey’s appearance.
The Republican asked Comey to attend a hearing just after the director announced that he would not be recommending charges against Hillary Clinton for mishandling classified information on her private email server.
Comey did not absolve Clinton, however. He scolded her “extremely careless” actions and dismantled several of the Democrat’s talking points defending her email practices.
In a statement announcing Lynch’s appearance, Goodlatte said that his committee plans to quiz the Obama appointee on several pressing topics, including recent terrorist attacks in San Bernardino and Orlando. But Lynch’s role in the Clinton email investigation — and her recent secret meeting with former President Bill Clinton — will also be addressed.
“The recent announcement by FBI Director Comey that he does not recommend criminal charges be brought against Hillary Clinton for her mishandling of classified information raises serious concerns,” Goodlatte said.
“It is uniquely troubling in light of Attorney General Lynch’s secret meeting with Bill Clinton. No one is above the law and the American people need to know that federal law enforcement is taking this misconduct seriously.”
Lynch came under intense scrutiny for meeting with Clinton on her airplane at the Phoenix airport. She has claimed that she and Clinton did not discuss the FBI investigation. But she did admit that if given another chance, she would not have met with the former president.
