House Speaker Paul Ryan is expected to serve a second term as speaker after winning Tuesday’s GOP leadership election.
Ryan was elected unanimously, since no GOP House members challenged him in the race following Republicans’ overwhelming win Nov.8.
“Welcome to the dawn of a new unified Republican government. It feels really good to say that, actually,” he said after the internal election. “This will be a government focused on turning President-elect Trump’s victory into real progress for the American people.”
Ahead of President-elect Donald Trump’s victory, a number of members questioned whether Ryan should remain in the post — accusing the speaker of not supporting the nominee as much as he could have.
Ryan put a strong emphasis on his goal of unifying the party, speaking with Trump about the party’s agenda daily and assisting with transition efforts.
House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, Majority Whip Steve Scalise and Conference Chair Cathy McMorris Rodgers are also expected to retain their leadership roles.
Ohio Rep. Steve Strivers will serve as National Republican Congressional Committee chairman, defeating Texas Rep. Rep. Roger Williams.
While the Wisconsin Republican won today’s race, members could vote differently on the House floor in January.
Democrats are slated to hold their leadership elections Nov. 30, pushing back votes in the wake of defeat.
