Vice President Mike Pence told Texans in a Thursday press conference that President Donald Trump wanted him to tell them that “we love Texas.”

Speaking with Governor Greg Abbott, Pence indicated he had spoken to the president earlier that day.

“I called the president on Air Force Two this morning,” Pence said. “And I asked him what he wanted me to tell you.”

“And he said, ‘just tell them we love Texas,'” Pence said to the crowd’s applause.

“You’ve inspired the nation by your resilience and by your courage, and we just came here to commend you and encourage you and to assure you we will be there,” he continued. “This president often says we’re one American family–when one hurts, we all hurt.”

“So on behalf of President Trump, on behalf of this governor, on behalf of all of us…just know we are with you and we will stay with you until Rockport and all of Southeast Texas come back, he concluded.
