Apple has been struggling to produce enough of the new iPhone X models in time for the holiday season, so the company is telling suppliers to downgrade some features, according to Bloomberg.
Apples has advertised the iPhone X as the future of the smartphone. The company announced the product on Sept. 12, but the new phone is not available for purchase until Nov. 3.
During the product unveiling, Apple boasted about the phone’s trademark feature Face ID, a biometric security capability that allows users to lock and unlock the device with unique facial characteristics and measurements.
The tech company may have been too eager with its release date, that was presumably chosen for imminent holiday shopping sprees. Apple discreetly told manufacturers and parts suppliers that it “could reduce the accuracy of the face-recognition technology” so they could vamp up production, reports Bloomberg on Wednesday. The report cites anonymous people familiar with the situation.
If the “accuracy” is affected by rushing manufacturing, then it could increase concerns from certain lawmakers, like Democratic Sen. Al Franken of Minnesota, who sent a letter to Apple in September about potential privacy issues with phone.
Apple’s decision may increase initial profits, yet it could also add to a growing list of technical problems for the company’s new slate of products.
Some of Apple’s newly-released iPhone 8s, for example, are emitting a “crackling” or “static” noise when connected to an earpiece, according to dozens of customers on Apple’s support forum, as well as other platforms. Apple confirmed that it is addressing the technical debacle, reports The Verge.
Apple’s new smartwatch, the Apple Watch Series 3, reportedly struggles with cellular connectivity, a capability that, like the iPhone X’s Face ID, was its premier selling point. Also, several users of Apple’s latest software upgrade have complained of significant glitches such as extremely slow loading times and total system failures.
