Republican Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin teared up after visiting the memorial site for three student athletes killed in a shooting at the University of Virginia (UVA).

A shooting erupted inside a parking garage on the UVA campus late Sunday, killing three student football players Devin Chandler, Lavel Davis Jr. and D’Sean Perry, and leaving two others injured. The governor visited the memorial site and appeared to be on the verge of tears while talking to reporters.

“It’s horrific. It’s truly horrific and we got three young men whose lives were cut so short,” he said, visibly tearing up. “It’s a moment for all of us to recognize that families are going to need to be supported and the community here needs to be supported, and it’s just horrific.”

The UVA police department identified the alleged suspect as 22-year-old Christopher Darnell Jones Jr. and was apprehended before noon Monday. University President Jim Ryan confirmed that Jones Jr. is a UVA student and a former football player.

Ryan and UVA Police Chief Timothy Longo said police found the three victims with gunshot wounds on a coach bus that returned from a field trip where they watched a play in Washington, D.C., according to ABC 7 News. The trip was connected to a class that all parties attended and not the football team. (RELATED: Suspect In Custody After Bridgewater, Virginia College Shooting Kills Two Officers)

One of the surviving victims, Michael Hollins Jr., underwent surgery and is expected to make a full recovery from the gunshot wound, according to ABC 7 News. Hollins is a junior and plays running back for the football team and was best friends with Perry, according to CNN. The other victim has not currently been identified.
