FX head John Landgraf said Thursday that Ryan Murphy’s spin-off series “American Sports Story” is finally heading for production.
“We have a fairly complete set of scripts for ‘American Sports Story’ by Stu Zicherman,” Landgraf told Deadline. “We haven’t dated that.” The series will be an anthological limited series with a focus on major sports figures.
The context of the series will be much like that of Murphy’s other “American Story” series, which has focused on horror and crime up until now. Each series is said to re-examine various notable moments from sports history through a modern lens, Deadline reported.

The first installment of the limited series will be built around “Gladiator: Aaron Hernandez and Football Inc.,” a podcast from the Boston Globe and Wondery, according to Deadline. Hernandez’s iconic rise and fall within the NFL, which ended in his suicide, has been the subject of much speculation, particularly surrounding his sexuality.
Murphy is best known as the genius behind iconic series such as “American Horror Story” and “American Crime Story.” He shot to fame with his adolescent musical drama “Glee,” and has since become one of the most powerful men in Hollywood. Seeing Murphy’s interpretation of the Aaron Hernandez story is going to be something epic to behold. He did such a wonderful job telling the story surrounding the O.J. Simpson trial in his previous “American Crime Story” series, and I am absurdly excited to see how his mind melds around this far more contemporary story from the world of sports.
