A Kansas family’s dog went missing eight years ago and was miraculously found in Idaho in January.

The dog is a beagle named Roscoe and he went missing from his family home in Wichita, Kansas, in 2015 when he was just a year old, according to a Fox News report published Thursday. Despite a microchip and his owner, Nicolle Leon, searching tirelessly, it took until January 2023 for Roscoe to be located more than 1,000 miles away in Idaho.

He was found by animal lovers Katherine Miller and Shae DeBerry, both of whom work in the local area’s Lost & Found Pets and other animal services, Fox News continued. Roscoe was finally scanned for his microchip and that’s when Leon got the most amazing call.

Leon said she was traveling through Texas for work when she received news that Roscoe had been found in Caldwell, Idaho.

“I was asleep and initially thought one of my [other] dogs [might] have gotten out since I was away for work,” Leon told the outlet. “But after talking to her and not recognizing the address, and then when she said she was in Idaho, I said, ‘Oh, that’s not my dog. I live in Kansas.”

Roscoe was apparently found in a “bad location known for stray dogs,” according to a Facebook post from Leon’s daughter.

She went on to ask what kind of dog had been found, which is when she knew it must be Roscoe. The pup was taken to the West Valley Humane Society Animal Shelter for pick-up, which is apparently when Roscoe was shy and not particularly happy about all the changes to his life.

“When he got out of the van the morning he came home, he came wagging his tail right to me,” Leon continued. “I brought him inside and my kids [had] just woken up. He was all over them wagging his tail with such excitement. I wasn’t sure if he really would remember us — but the way he acted, I think he does.” (RELATED: Mummified Wolf Pup Unearthed In Adorable Condition)

Leon noted that she had assumed someone stole him back in 2015 and the family continued to talk about him. They even had a conversation about the pup a few weeks before he was found.

What a beautiful way to end such a sad, scary series of events. I’m not crying, you’re crying.
