“Yellowstone” actor Josh Lucas told Entertainment Tonight on Saturday that he was so ready for Matthew McConaughey’s confirmed spinoff series.

Lucas portrays a young John Dutton (Kevin Costner) in the Taylor Sheridan cowboy drama. While in attendance at the PaleyFest LA for “Yellowstone” panel, Lucas told reporters that he’s “always so fascinated to see what Taylor [Sheridan] is doing as he tells the story,” noting that, “The thing that moves me or surprises me most is that every time I think something is too crazy or too fantastical, it turns out it’s based on a true story from Taylor’s life or from something that is very close to the cowboys that all of this story is about.”

McConaughey was rumored to be in talks with Sheridan to either take over the “Yellowstone” series from Costner amid growing tensions on set, or to lead his own spinoff series. Whether Costner returns to the series or not, the McConaughey show is moving forward, The Hollywood Reporter announced in late March.

“John Dutton is partly Taylor Sheridan, partly Kevin Costner, so I’ve got these two powerful men who are icons in what they’re doing now,” Lucas continued in his conversation with ET. “It has the weight and the challenge of trying to fill the shoes of the great Kevin Costner and also Taylor’s vision for who John Dutton is.” (RELATED: Did ‘Yellowstone’ Drop A Major Spoiler Years Ago That We’ve Ignored Until Now?)

But he’s still not quite sure what the plan is, or whether Lucas will be part of the story. “I’m sure [Sheridan] has great ideas for how these characters merge together,” he quipped. “Part of it is the mystery of the mind of that creator…bring it on.”
